Do you know what participatory certification is?
The Xique Xique Network for Solidarity Marketing has been developing a unique approach to Participatory Certification. Currently, with the support of the Government of the State of Rio Grande do Norte, it has farmers and technicians, divided into six commissions, serving 18 municipalities in the region, through actions to strengthen productive backyard agriculture, promoting agroecology, feminism, and youth.
The Marketing Secretariat of Unicafes Nacional, attentive to the various processes related to Family Farming, encourages cooperatives and associations through training and the exchange of experiences on how to obtain certification. According to market advisor Hetel Santos, the best way for farmers who want to work with agroecological/organic production is to organize themselves into groups and start the production process, following the recommended practices for this type of relationship with the production system (without the use of pesticides and synthetic chemical additives and new relationships with the ecosystem). It is through this organization, which jointly practices the agreed procedures and recognizes each other, that they can also seek registration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA). This registration will allow the recognized foods to be marketed as organic.

It is important to highlight that, to sell a product as organic, there are three methods recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA): Social Control Organization (OCS) for direct marketing, such as the Alimenta Brasil Program (PAB) and the National School Feeding Program (PNAE); Participatory Certification (SPG); and Certification by audit. All three processes must be registered with the Ministry and follow organic production practices.
