Unicafes-MA was created on December 8, 2008, in the city of São Luís, at Sítio Pirapora, in a Founding General Assembly, which brought together more than 20 Cooperatives linked to Family Farming in the State of Maranhão. As a result of the Assembly, Unicafes-MA was constituted, with twelve (12) cooperatives. In 2015, Unicafes-MA began a discussion with the cooperatives to change the corporate name from UNICAFES-MA to FEDERAÇÃO UNICAFES-MA, where in November 2018 the Constituent Assembly of the Federation of Family Farming Cooperatives of the State of Maranhão – Federação Unicafes-MA – took place.

Mission
To promote the economic and social development of Family Farming and the Solidarity Economy, strengthening the Cooperatives of the State of Maranhão, family farming, its representation, production, management and marketing of products originating from Family Farming. "To make Cooperativism a popular instrument for sustainable and solidarity-based local development of family farmers and producers and the solidarity economy, articulating economic initiatives that expand job opportunities, income distribution, food production and improve quality of life."

Vision
Cooperativism as a tool for local and regional development, focusing on strengthening family farming.

Objectives
The articulation of cooperatives of family farmers and segments of the solidarity economy, as well as the creation of new cooperatives to favor the organization of production, technical services, credit and marketing of family farming products through the Unicafes-MA Federation.

Representation and Scope
Currently, the Unicafes-MA Federation develops actions that benefit 32 (thirty-two) cooperatives throughout the State of Maranhão, actions that range from the organization and founding of cooperatives, discussion of government purchases, the National School Feeding Program and the Food Acquisition Program. In addition, it organizes demands for public policies that will strengthen and develop cooperative activities in Maranhão.

Partnerships
The Unicafes-MA Federation develops actions to strengthen cooperatives through partnerships with various actors: Federal Government (Ministries), State Government (Secretariats), Municipal Government (Secretariats), Public and Private Institutions, as well as Civil Society Organizations.
